I have made this KS3 Still Life art project for our Year 9 students to work on over Summer, but it could easily be used for any other groups (I think!). The idea for our students is that they will complete the artwork over Summer and it will be used as a starting point for their first GCSE project in September.

This home learning project is split up into different ‘lessons’, based on Still Life in art. Students are given examples to look at, video clips to watch and lesson outcomes to help them work independently. Students will end up having an understanding of Still Life in art, a range of observational drawings and collage experiments.

I have purposely not made the art project very long, after all of the independent learning students have been doing at home during lockdown, and with all of the uncertainty about timetables / lessons in the arts next year, I have just tried to make this art project quite simple.
I have also tried to make it easy for any student to do with basic equipment. It can easily be adapted or change to suit the needs of your art students.

Students are asked to collect Still Life objects from around their home, then create a series of observational drawings. The outcomes for these are linked to accuracy, controlling their materials, proportions and detail. They are not asked to work in tone as they will be collaging onto their work.

I have shared other art lessons for teaching colour theory here – enjoy!
Students then look at different examples of Still Life collage work, watch a video clip then make their own response. Students will only need a pencil, glue and scissors, however, if they don’t have glue and scissors at home, they can easily place their papers down and photograph them in place and submit their work like that.
We started this project last week (using Google Classrooms) and we have already had some great responses from students:

Thanks for your comment 🙂 I have just shared it with you. Thinking of things that all students can do is so tricky as the activities need to use minimal materials etc! I’ve tried to make this so students can use what they already have at home.
