We know it is old because of the use of texture, shape and line in the drawing – the windows are drawn to look wonky and there are small details showing areas on the building that look damaged or worn. Joseph has used her pen to create different textures and marks such as hatching, cross-hatching and scribbles. Mark-making is used to create a sense of movement, such as the leaves falling across the house and sweeping onto the path. The use of tone adds depth to the drawing, creating shadows which contrast areas that are much brighter. This use of tone brings a sense of balance to the artwork, as nowhere is too dark or too bright.
